17-1 Finding Comfort

Rather than “no pain, no gain,” a better motto in yoga breaks is “no pain, no pain.” Starting with the body, students learn to tune into sensations and identify their feelings. As they become more adept at feeling their bodily sensations, they begin to notice ways that their feelings are affected—by what they do and say; by what others do and say to them; and by how they think about themselves and others.

Learning to recognize the subtle messages that make them feel a certain way, students develop a sense of control over their responses to the world around them. They recognize where their feelings come from and what they can do to change them (see Appendix 3).
